Introduction
Niedermuehle (Lower Mill) was the last German home of the Münsterland Plate family (1819-1844). It is now a museum in Steinfurt. This above photograph was taken in 1891. There were two buildings, one a house to left and other a water mill to right on Aa River.

Since here are so many branches of the Plate family all over the world, this Plate branch is often referred as “the Münsterland Plates” in European genealogical circles. The earliest Münsterland Plate was found in Coesfeld, Münster, Germany around 1670. The first Plate went to America in 1832 and the rest of the entire Münsterland Plate family, in 1844, joined him and his three brothers who came before 1839 in New York City. Most of the Münsterland Plates settled in Wisconsin (1844-1848), mostly in New Munster in the Wheatland Township. One of these Plates was struck with gold fever and ended up in San Francisco in 1850. He married a Tolle in New York City a year earlier and his youngest sister-in-law took her children to Europe for their education. Their personal sheets show how they made out in their lives.

The Plate surname is German occuptional, meaning “armormaker”. A silvered clam shell is used in most Plate family coats of arms.
